Milling is a machining process. In machining, material is removed from the workpiece in the form of chips with the aid of a cutting tool. Other machining processes are turning, drilling or grinding.

The workpiece is clamped in the milling machine during milling. The milling is created by plunging the milling tool into the workpiece while rotating at high speed and moving it along the contours of the workpiece. In modern CNC milling machines, the cutting speed, feed rate, cutting width and pressure angle can be precisely controlled. In this way, high-precision and complex workpieces are manufactured.

The milling process is used for many different materials. In equipment, machine and plant construction, it is mostly used for machining metallic workpieces. Aluminum, titanium, steel and many other metals, but also plastics and special materials are suitable for milling.

Both flat surfaces and complex geometric contours can be milled.
