Turning is one of the most important machining processes. Machining uses a cutting tool to remove material from the workpiece in the form of chips. Other machining processes are milling, drilling or grinding.
The workpiece is clamped in the lathe during turning and rotates around its own axis. The blank is passed along a stationary cutting tool. Upon contact between the cutting tool and the turned part, the material is removed, creating the desired shape and contour. By using modern CNC lathes, the cutting depth and feed rate of the workpiece can be precisely controlled. In this way, highly precise and complex workpieces are manufactured.
The turning process is mainly used for machining metallic workpieces. An analogous woodworking process is turning.
Turned are all kinds of workpieces with rotational geometric shapes, such as screws, axles, shafts, etc.
